EVERGREEN VALLEY COLLEGE SET TO PREMIERE "PAPERS, THE MOVIE"
-
(SAN JOSÉ, CA—March 10, 2010) A documentary highlighting stories of undocumented youth will premiere at the Center for the Arts at Evergreen Valley College (EVC) in San José on Wednesday, March 10 at 7 pm. As the first site to showcase this film in Santa Clara County, EVC, is also the college of choice for many students facing similar challenges, as addressed in the documentary.
-
“Papers” is the story of undocumented youth and the challenges they face as they turn 18 without legal status. These are young people who were born outside the U.S. and raised in this country. They were educated in American schools, hold American values and know only the U.S. as home.
- EVC President David Wain Coon says, “We celebrate the diversity of our college community and with a large group of our students who are trying to get an education and succeed, it is our responsibility to provide them with access and opportunity, regardless of their immigration status. This film is a great way to create awareness throughout the community and it is our honor to host it.”
According to the Urban Institute, there are approximately 2 million undocumented children who were born outside the U.S. and raised in this country. Papers has already made its way nationwide to call attention to the DREAM Act, which would provide many undocumented youth a path to citizenship if they attend college or join the military.
EVC is located at 3095 Yerba Buena Rd. and parking will be free on the evening of March 10 for the premiere. Entrance to the Center for the Arts is located on the southeast portion of campus, off Yerba Buena Rd, near the bus turnaround. Tickets are $3.00 and can be purchased at the door.
Papers is sponsored by Evergreen Valley College, Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network (SIREN), Cochitlehual-li, Enlace, H.S.I. Transfer Project, Student Advocates for Higher Education (SAHE), United Food and Commercial Workers Local 5, Youth Empowerment Strategy for Success (YESS).
